The "Withdrawn Report"

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has removed its environmental report called "The Critical Area Act: Intent, Reality, and the Need for Reform," from its Web site.

Also missing is the associated Feb 4 press release, and a news brief with link at the top of their "News" roundup page.

The report analyzed statistics from 1990-2000 and 2003-2006. It was used as a lobbying tool in the recently-concluded Maryland General Assembly session.

CBF wanted to make the case that the state’s Critical Area has been degraded by 24 years of poor enforcement, bad planning, and overdevelopment. It focused on Kent, Anne Arundel, Queen Anne’s and Calvert counties along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

Kent County's commissioners and planning office objected to statistics in the report that don't match what are on file in the county, in late February.

A story in the Easton Star Democrat is here but might only be available to subscribers.

While several press releases dated April 8 are on the CBF Web site, this one isn't (as of mid-day on Wednesday):

CBF WITHDRAWS CRITICAL AREA REPORT

(ANNAPOLIS, MD) -- The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has withdrawn its February 2008 Critical Area Act report. Kent County officials raised questions about CBF’s data for the county, and as a result of further review of county records and discussion with staff, CBF determined the Kent County data in the report were inaccurate.

CBF will engage in a thorough review of the data contained in the report.

CBF publicly apologizes for any errors in the report, and thanks the Kent County planning staff for their willingness to work with CBF to correct the record.
